Driving Winter Travel Checklist


Be prepared For WINTER Travel... Below is a check list to customize for your needs.

Check Online Weather Conditions:

  • Before traveling, look at the weather forecast for your travel destination.
  • Make note any storm warnings or adverse conditions.

2. Fluids & Antifreeze:

  • Top off all Fluids, including windshield washer fluid.
  • Check & make sure Coolant is “winter ready” correct blend of Antifreeze.

3. Tires “Winter”:

  • Consider “winter” tires for traction in snow or ice.
  • Make sure your tires are properly inflated.

4. Emergency Preparedness Kit:

• Have in your trunk @ ALL times….

  • Sleeping bags & Extra Blankets
  • Clothing such as , gloves, hats, jackets & SOCKS
  • Flashlights (couple) with extra batteries
  • First aid kit
  • Snacks. Protein (Nuts, Raisens…),Water, (non perishable)
  • Jumper Cables (longer better) ***check your Battery Terminals too
  • Ice scraper or Snow Brush, De-Icer Liquid
  • Shovel *small hand held 
  • Sand or Cat Litter (used for traction)
  • Tire chains (if required) ***test putting them on

5. Vehicle List:

  • Battery, Brakes, Lights, and Fluids, check or go into your Repair Shop
  • Heating System & Defrosters test & ensure are properly working.
  • Windshield Wiper Blades replace even consider “winter” blades.

6. Fuel:

  • Keep your fuel tank at ABOVE half full to prevent fuel line freezing & to provide a source of heat if you get stuck.

7. Charge Devices:

  • Fully charge your phone & electronic devices b/4 you leave.

8. Check Lights:

  • Test all lights, headlights, brake lights, & turn signals.

9. Plan Details of Your Route:

  • Follow main roads as they are more likely to be plowed & salted.
  • Give someone else your travel plans along with expected arrival time.

10. Road Conditions Check & Continually Stay Informed:

  • Use apps or websites that provide real-time updates.
  • Watch weather & traffic updates during your journey.

11. Drive with Caution: 

  • Slow down & increase following distance between vehicle in front.
  • Brake gently to avoid skidding (always good to test before you need to).
  • Accelerate gradually to avoid slipping.

12. MONITOR Fluids:

  • Coolants & windshield washer fluid levels routinely throughout trip.

13. Snow Chains KNOW HOW TO USE:

  • Make sure you know how to install them properly “Test Install”.

14. Adjust Behavior for driving & focus:

  • Caution on all bridges, overpasses, & shaded areas, for frozen areas.
  • No sudden movements including sharp turns


If conditions are severe, your safety should come first…consider delaying your travel plans or alternative transportation if at all possible.
